- Abstract
A biography of Carlton Hayes, an American educator and European historian, is presented. He was born in May 1882 at Afton, New York. Hayes was reared by his mother, a piano teacher, and his father, a doctor, as a Baptist. He finished high school at the age of sixteen, entered Columbia University in 1900 and had his master's degree and doctorate also at Columbia. Hayes assisted in building the American Catholic Historical Association. Hayes' early profession has been greatly inspired by Charles Bead, an advocate of "New History."
