- Title
Beyond Greenways: The Next Step for City Trails and Walking Routes by Robert Searns (review).
- Authors
Smardon, Richard C.
- Abstract
In "Beyond Greenways: The Next Step for City Trails and Walking Routes," Robert Searns provides guidance on designing and implementing greenway walking trails at different scales. The book covers grand loop regional trails, town walks, and neighborhood walks. Searns discusses the evolution of green infrastructure, different walkway configurations, town walk configurations and themes, guiding principles for trail development, route planning, creating a trail development plan, building support and engaging the public, and case studies of municipal trail development. The book is informative and reflects Searns' experience with trail development projects, although it could have included more discussion on barriers to trail development and equitable access for resource-restricted communities. It would be useful for those working on walking trail development, particularly with nonprofits, public-private partnerships, or community organizations.
