- Title
Painting Labor: Ramiro Gomez's Representations of Domestic Work.
- Authors
Brody, David
- Abstract
The art of Los Angeles--based artist Ramiro Gomez critiques the precarious nature of domestic work. By painting figures onto the pages of luxury-oriented shelter magazines, Gomez uses his art to establish a dialogue with his viewers, where the power dynamics of race, gender, and economics become palpable. This essay considers how Gomez's art creates a subversive intervention, highlighting the invisibility of labor and the cultural stigma attached to service work. The article concludes by assessing what it means to collect this political work in relation to questions about privilege and guilt.
