- Title
J.R.R. TOLKIEN AND THE 1954 NOMINATION OF E.M. FORSTER FOR THE NOBEL PRIZE IN LITERATURE.
- Authors
WISE, DENNIS WILSON
- Abstract
The author offers a possible explanation for the decision of J.R.R. Tolkien to nominate E.M. Forster for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954 when nothing in Tolkien's published writing or interviews ever indicated that he ever read Forster. Topics covered include general resonances between Tolkien and Forster, possible influence of Forster's "A Passage to India" on Tolkien and speculation on the role of C.S. Lewis' professorship at University of Cambridge in Tolkien's nomination of Forster.
