This article details the status and struggle of non-governmental organizations in Turkey. Civil society in Turkey is not highly functional. The government enforces censorship laws, including a law against ''insulting Turkishness," which is all too frequently used to silence writers and other intellectuals like the recent Nobel Prize winner, Orhan Pamuk.
