- Title
'That Chief Undercurrent of My Mind': Percy Grainger and the Aesthetics of English Folk Song.
- Authors
Freeman, Graham
- Abstract
The article explores transcriptions of English folk songs by the composer Percy Grainger and their impact on ethnomusicological study. The author suggests that Grainger's ideas on the art of transcription, the primacy of performance, and the aesthetic validity of all musical utterances are mainstream elements of ethnomusicology. Other topics include musical notation and technology, melodic variation, and song as fetish object.
