- Title
Reconstructing A Nation Through Silk and Diplomacy: American Material Culture and Foreign Relations During the Reconstruction Era.
- Authors
Weaver, Paige
- Abstract
The article explores the silk trade during the Reconstruction Era of American history. Silk has regularly been considered a luxury item and was first cultivated in ancient China. During Reconstruction American diplomats raised alarm as their concerns grew over Japanese ambitions to create a monopoly on the material (blight and economic downturn had facilitated the end of substantial silk production in the United States.) The threat of monopolization was seen as a serious threat to international relations.
