- Abstract
In view of the current critique of capitalism this paper tries to ground the concept of the Social Market Economy in the philosophy of ethics and economics. The reflection on the conditions of the possibility of economic exchange shows that the social element in the social Market Economy is not an arbitrary modification of the "natural" market order. Instead the paper gives evidence that individual freedom for more than one person cannot be conceived of without acknowledging the intersubjective genesis bounds the economic and the social perspective inextricably together. By illuminating this interconnectedness the paper finally rejects the current calls for a fundamental reform of the market economy as unjustified.
