- Title
Sir Archibald Alison and The New English Dictionary.
- Authors
Considine, John
- Abstract
The article focuses on a circular issued by the Philological Society in July 1857 which proposed a search for unregistered words and idioms by the less-read authors of the 16th and 17th centuries and to be collected in a new dictionary of the English language. Topics include the reproduction of the circular in "The Athenaeum," the reason for the exclusion of historian Sir Archibald Alison in any of the lists of text being read from that period, and the accusation of plagiarism against Alison.
