- Title
HOGARTH'S TITLES IN HIS PROGRESSES AND OTHER PICTURE SERIES.
- Authors
Cowley, Robert L. S.
- Abstract
The article focuses on English painter William Hogarth's titles in his progresses and other picture series. An agreed nomenclature does not exist for the titles of the constituent pictures of Hogarth's earlier series. The prints have plate numbers only. The paintings A Harlot's Progress were destroyed in 1755 and the picture frames of A Rake's Progress and Marriage A-la-mode bear titles which post date Hogarth. His preferred titles are printed on the verso of his proposals for the sale of the paintings of the earlier series, dated January 25, 1744-45.
