- Abstract
Desde hace varias décadas, la contaminación del agua por metales pesados se ha convertido en un gran problema ambiental y de salud. El plomo es uno de los metales más distribuidos y encontrados en medio acuoso. La intoxicación con plomo en el hombre puede ocasionar presión arterial alta, disfunción severa de riñones, entre otros, además en niños causa problemas de desarrollo neurológico [1]. Existen diferentes métodos de tratamiento para remover metales pesados en solución acuosa; entre ellos, el proceso de adsorción mostró ser un método económicamente viable y efectivo [2]. Se han estudiado residuos agrícolas como adsorbentes, por sus características químicas superficiales que han mostrado tener capacidad de remover metales pesados. Sin embargo, es necesario modificarlos para incrementar sus capacidades de remoción. En este trabajo se modificó cáscara de coco (CC), cáscara de nuez (CN) y semilla de uva (SU) con ácido cítrico (AC) para la remoción de Pb(II) en solución acuosa. Los materiales se modificaron con una solución de AC a diferentes niveles de concentración. Se estudió los efectos de la concentración de la solución del AC, el pH y la presencia de otras especies. El efecto de la concentración del AC para la modificación de la CC y CN mostró que la capacidad de adsorción disminuyó en el orden siguiente 3M > 2M > 1M. Al aumentar la concentración del AC, la capacidad de adsorber Pb(II) incrementó, ya que aumentó los sitios carboxílicos en la superficie del material y por lo tanto más sitios activos disponibles para enlazar el ion metálico. En cuanto a la SU, la capacidad de adsorción disminuyó en el orden siguiente 3M ≈ 1M > 2M. En cuanto al efecto del pH de la solución se encontró que al aumentar el pH de 2 a 5 aumenta hasta 34, 32 y 38 veces la capacidad de adsorción de la CC3M, CN3M y SU1M respectivamente, debido al aumento de las atracciones electrostáticas entre la superficie de los materiales y el Pb(II) en solución, por lo que a pH de 5 se alcanza la máxima capacidad de adsorción. La presencia de otras especies no afectó significativamente la capacidad de adsorción de Pb(II) sobre los materiales. La máxima capacidad de CC3M, CN3M y SU1M para adsorber Pb(II) en solución acuosa fue de 171 mg/g, 162 mg/g y 302 mg/g respectivamente. La modifi- cación con AC incrementó significativamente la adsorción del Pb(II), además de que sus propiedades químicas y el pH de la solución juegan un papel importante en el proceso de adsorción.
