- Abstract
The article attempts to establish the notion that man shares the instinctive patterns of the whole vertebrate phylum. This has been the subject of studies by Herbert Spencer, Peter Kropotkin and John Harold George Le Bon. To this end, seven human games that are played spontaneously by other vertebrates, untaught are cited. These include Tig, Ambuscade, Peep-Bo, Follow My Leader, Dressing Up, Round Dance, and King of the Castle. Three or four of these foreshadow parts of adult patterns. In adults, gregarious instinctive activity that fits into one of four distinct patterns, each with its characteristic mood and details, is found, including aggregation, crowd, herd, and team.
