- Abstract
The article discusses the "whirlpool" sign of ovarian torsion on MRI imaging. Ovarian torsion is a rare but serious gynecological emergency caused by the twisting of the ovary and fallopian tube. The "whirlpool" sign is a characteristic appearance on imaging studies, indicating the twisted pedicle between the uterus and the affected ovary. Ultrasound is the initial diagnostic choice, but MRI may be advantageous in cases of diagnostic uncertainty. Other imaging features of ovarian torsion include enlargement of the affected ovary, displacement of the uterus, and decreased contrast enhancement. Ovarian torsion can be caused by preexisting ovarian tumors or cysts, ovarian enlargement, infertility treatments, pregnancy, and pelvic inflammatory disease. Early detection through medical imaging is crucial to prevent complications such as ischemia, infarction, and ovarian necrosis.
