- Title
THE TRINITY, ADIAPHORA, ECCLESIOLOGY, AND REFORMATION: JOHN OWEN'S THEORY OF RELIGIOUS TOLERATION IN CONTEXT.
- Authors
Lim, Paul
- Abstract
The article analyzes the Interregnum and Restoration context of the theory of John Owen on the liberty of conscience and religious toleration. For Owen, Reformed, Protestant and Trinitarian are the only consciences that could be tolerated. According to theologian Gordon Schochet, the adiaphora failed to generate much historiographical interest even though it became a hotly debated issue during the Restoration religious settlement. The practice of mutual charity is one of the lessons learned by Owen from the early church.
