- Abstract
Asthma is a chronic airway disease burdened by the periods of symptoms worsening and regression. The main feature of the disease is inflammation followed by bronchial hyperreactivity. Numerous specific and non-specific factors can trigger acute exacerbations of asthma. Reducing airway inflammation by means of reducing proinflammatory environmental factors, daily use of anti-inflammatory drugs and control of comorbidities related to asthma progression, have been proved as the best measures for preventing asthma worsening. Actions such as children and parents education, as well as written plans for recognition and treatment of the disease can promote adherence and reduce the need for symptomatic treatment. Treatment of asthma worsening is usually initiated with short acting beta2 agonists, oxygen inhalation and ipratropium bromide inhalation and peroral corticosteroid treatment, depending on symptoms severity. Further approach is elaborated according to Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) guidelines from 2018.
