- Abstract
Nutrition is important for successful breeding of horses, even more to athletes animals, so the objective was to describe the nutritional management of horses used in "vaquejada" proofs. This study was conducted during "vaquejada" proofs in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, using 2061 horses through the application of questionnaires to the owners or to the responsible for the animals about the amount and frequency of meals daily supply, industrialized concentrated and industrial mineral salt for each animal. Moreover, with the aid of metallic tape obtained the thoracic diameter of each animal and with this data was calculated the weight true. The values obtained were analyzed by descriptive statistics, using arithmetic mean, standard deviation and percentage, as well as Pearson correlation, with significance level of 0.05%. Of the horses analyzed, 752 (36.5%) received some type of bran, beyond the concentrate industrialized. The average daily amount given to the animals was 4.8 kg (± 3.2 kg) and frequency ranged from one supply (20%) to four (1.6%) times per day. Of the animals that received industrialized concentrated (76.3%) were concentrated to 3 times daily. In relation to the supply of mineral salt, 1.670 (81.0%) animals received mineral supplementation, and to 71.1%, mineral salt was fed ad libitum. The true body weight was not influenced by the amount of salt given to horses. It can be concluded that the nutritional management is important for the development of equine athletes.
