- Title
Síndrome de Behçet Ocular: Una revisión bibliográfica de la literatura.
- Abstract
Introduction: Behçet's Syndrome (BS) is a multisystemic disease included in the group of variable vessel vasculitis. Ocular BS (SBO) is one of its most prevalent manifestations and with the highest burden of disease. Objectives: To summarize available and updated evidence on SBO. Methodology: A bibliographic review of the literature is carried out following the guidelines of the "Scoping Review" method. Results: SBO mainly affects individuals originating from the Middle East, South, and East Asia. Its clinical presentation is broad, the most common being the presence of oral and genital ulcers, followed by ocular involvement. SBO manifests itself primarily as anterior and/or posterior uveitis and retinal vasculitis, which can lead to blindness. Its pathophysiology is not clear, but there is an interaction between genetic and environmental factors that generate a dysregulated immune response. Its diagnosis is according to clinical criteria, supported by diagnostic studies such as fluorescein angiography and optical coherence tomography. Treatment is based on local and systemic corticosteroids, immunosuppressants, and surgery in selected cases. SBO represents an important cause of morbidity given the visual sequelae it brings. Discussion: The strengths of the review are presented, highlighting the compilation of updated literature together with the approach of local health personnel to the knowledge of SBO. Regarding the limitations of the study, it is necessary to generate epidemiological studies at the national level and publications that evaluate the level of evidence in the recent literature.
