- Abstract
The article discusses a study that compared brachytherapy versus whole-breast irradiation (WBI) with respect to likelihood of breast preservation, complications and survival among older women with breast cancer. It cites the increased use of breast brachytherapy after lumpectomy for early breast cancer despite a lack of randomized trial information that compares its effectiveness with WBI. The log-rank test and proportional hazard models were used to compare cumulative incidence and risk of subsequent mastectomy and death. The results showed that treatment with brachytherapy compared with WBI was associated with long-term breast preservation and increased complications.
