- Abstract
The article discusses a research study which ascertains the causes of stillbirth in a population that is diverse by race/ethnicity and geography from March 2006 to September 2008. The most common causes of death cited were obstetric conditions, placental abnormalities, fetal genetic/structural abnormalities, infection, umbilical cord abnormalities, hypertensive disorders, and other maternal medical conditions. Non-Hispanic African American women had higher stillbirths associated with obstetric complications than non-Hispanic whites and Hispanics. Non-Hispanic African women were found to have had stillbirths occurring intrapartum and early in gestation.
