- Abstract
The article discusses the Kazak chieftain Osman Batur, also known as Osman son of Islam, particularly focusing on his image as a national hero in Kazakstan's historical memory. It examines his relations with China and the Soviet Union and his efforts to maintain the autonomy of the Altay region of the Chinese province of Xinjiang. The author also comments on Chinese decolonization and Kazak identity, nationalism, and oral tradition. Osman's defeat by Han warlord Sheng Shicai and his alliance Mongolia are also considered.
