LEARNING A FOREIGN LANGUAGE. ENGLISH AS A LINGUA FRANCA.

- Abstract
This paper starts by underlining the importance of the English language around the world as a means of communication between people with different linguistic backgrounds. As it has become the language used in all fields of activity, from international business to politics, medicine and education, teachers of English have been challenged to find proper methods of teaching that ensure comprehension and development of communicative skills. Research has shown that learning occurs first through interaction and only later on it becomes part of an individual’s cognition. Along the years professors resorted to a multitude of student-centered approaches that little by little replaced the obsolete grammar-based and theoretical method. The focus is not on what to learn anymore, but on how to learn, prompting thus language and skills development through collaborative tasks and active involvement in the learning process.
