- Abstract
This article analyzes the development of global knowledge during the 19th century, the conditions required for it to spread, as well as the concept of "traveling knowledge," which describes how knowledge was transferred between the Europeans and their colonies around the world. Topics discussed include how how Protestant missionaries, such as David Livingstone, aided the transfer of knowledge during the 18th century in Africa, Asia, and the South Sea, the "traveling theory" of how knowledge is transferred between cultures developed by the cultural critic Edward Said, as well as how the diaries of many missionaries, such the diary of David Darling, have revealed to historians what kind of knowledge was transferred and how it was done.
