- Abstract
Due to an important physiological role in the plant metabolism, sulphur, next to nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and magnesium, is considered one of the most important nutrients. With a sulphur deficit increasing in Polish soils over the last few decades, research has been taken up to evaluate the effect of varied sulphur rates and forms on the yield and content of micronutriens - zinc and copper in Mila cultivar potato tubers. A three-year strict field experiment was set up on Haplic Luvisol with acid reaction (pHKCl-5,3), mean richness in available forms of phosphorus, potassium and magnesium, low - of sulphur. The field experiments involved the sulphur application at the rates of 20 and 40 kg S·kg-1 in a sulphate form (VI) (K2SO4 and (NH4)2SO4) as well as in elemental form (Wigor S, containing 90% of pure sulphur and 10% of bentonite). Although potato is considered to the group of crops with low sulphur requirements, the present research showed a clear effect of that component on the content of yield and micronutriens in its tubers. The three-year-research control tuber yield mean value was 42.9 t·ha-1, whereas for S treatments ranged from 45.1 to 46.1 t·ha-1.The highest potato tuber yields were recorded after the application of 40 kg S·ha-1 in the form potassium sulphate (VI). In respective experiment years there was reported a relatively high variation in the size of potato tuber yields. The highest yield-forming effectiveness of sulphur was demonstrated in the year in which the amount of precipitation was much lower than the 3 multi-year mean. Doses: 40 kg S·ha-1 in ionic form ((NH4)2SO4 i K2SO4) and 20 kg S·ha-1 - in elemental form (Wigor S) usually significantly increased the content of copper in potato tubers. Clear differences were not dentified between elemental and ionic sulphur in aspect of the content and uptake of copper with yield of potato tubers. Uptake of zinc by potato tubers yield of were significantly higher in plants fertilized with sulfur than in unfertilised this component.
