- Abstract
The role played by the mass-media in guiding the masses was essential for the pursuit of more objectives: political, economic, social, cultural etc. The several dramatic events that followed the vote are well known, when the mass of voters was strongly influenced by the mass-media. The most eloquent example is the one used by the Nazi propaganda of the 1930s. The radio proved to be the most effective means for propagating the Nazi ideas, becoming a daily propaganda instrument. This manipulation method far exceeded the other manipulation means: the press, the literature, the theatre, the cinema, the political shows. In order to reach its goal, Hitler's regime promoted the selling of a cheap radio, the percentage of those who owned it growing from 25% in 1933 to 70% in 1939. Likewise, listening to the radio had become an obligation, including the promotion of a joint audit session, especially during demonstrations or during the work breaks within factories and institutions. A similar process took place in the communist Russia, with adverse effects upon the eastern countries that were under its influence. Sensitive issues derived from that process, regarding the accession of those countries to the European Union. The role of mass-media in this situation is that of conveying the benefits of each country when it becomes part of a united and powerful Europe and, sometimes, the benefit of fighting against the anti-European positions. Currently, we have at our disposal complex means, even sophisticated means -- TV, internet, social networking -- capable of influencing the public opinion one way or another. It is the responsibility of the political leaders.
