- Abstract
The article discusses depictions of the Book of Tobit, part of the Biblical apocrypha, in European painting in the 1500s and 1600s, particularly highlighting 17th century Dutch and Flemish examples. It comments on the journey of the Biblical figure Tobias in this story and an incident in which he captured a fish trying to attack him. The author also considers themes of familial loyalty and marriage. Paintings presented include "The Marriage Contract of Tobias and Sarah," by Jan Steen, from 1668, "Tobit and Anna with the Kid," by Rembrandt van Rijn, from 1625, and the "Coastal Mountain Landscape with Tobias and the Angel," by Marten de Cock, from the 1630s.
