- Title
Building Cities, Making Friends: A Meditation, in Five General Propositions.
- Authors
Kingwell, Mark
- Abstract
The article discusses the ways in which various urban renewal projects throughout the U.S. and Canada work to support community and friendship. The author relies on philosopher Roland Barthes' concept of sonority, which relates to people's need to be heard by others, and explains how city development can promote this concept. It is argued that a city's built environment acts as a philosophical extension of the human body, and that architects participate in the creation of an urban community when constructing both private and public spaces.
