CONTESTED SPACES, SHARED PLACES: The Museum of Anthropology at ubc, Aboriginal Peoples, and Postcolonial Criticism.
- Authors
CLAPPERTON, JONATHAN ALEX
- Abstract
The article discusses the history of the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia (UBC), and its involvement with the local First Nations whose culture is on display at the museum. In particular, the article responds to postcolonial critiques that say museums are complicit in confining and distorting aboriginal culture and identity according to Western norms. However, the history of active collaboration and cooperation between the UBC museum and local Indian tribes, especially the Stó:lō people, is discussed as a counterpoint to the postcolonial perspective.
