- Abstract
This text gives a panoramic analysis about understanding human dignity in the various texts of the Social Doctrine of the Church, showing this understanding in several of the Popes documents, particularly Leo XII, Pius XI, Pius XII and John Paul II. It also points out the historical and cultural aspects that influenced each pronouncement, these being determinants to bring evolution in the Magisterial thought regarding the social issue. The starting point is the anthropological vision of the Social Doctrine of the Church, summarized in terms of "man created by God in His own image and rescued by the blood of Jesus Christ" (Sollicitudo Rei Socialis 29). From then on, the text defends the primacy of the individual human being over society and the totalitarian claims that pervaded humanity's recent history, although a single person is always a being-in-relation and situated in a determined society.
