Michel Tremblay, Canada's Greatest Playwright.
- Authors
Hays, Matthew
- Abstract
The article is an interview with Canadian playwright and author, Michel Tremblay, who has been openly gay since the 1970s. His one-act play, "Les Belles-Soeurs," set off a controversy in 1968 when it was produced on a Montréal stage when it featured the working class. Tremblay believes Québécois society is more accepting of homosexuality than English-speaking Canada because Québec is less pressured by American culture. He discusses how being gay has made him a writer and shaped the characters in his stories. He also discusses why he was criticized during the 1980s for not writing about AIDS.
