The article analyzes the poem "On the Death of a Metaphysician," by George Santayana. It explores the distinction between philosophy and poetry and highlights the views of philosopher Plato including his Allegory of the Cave to illustrate this distinction. It is suggested that the poem can be considered as a sustained critical commentary on that allegory.
