- Abstract
The article discusses the history of the concept of "security" as a late 19th century value for European rulers. Case studies of security threats to government leaders are presented and analyzed for the reactions they produced and the consequent discussion engendered about the protection of monarchs. The conclusion is reached that such security considerations were traditionally viewed in the context of soldierly or aristocratic virtuousness into the late 19th century, while the advent of more modern terrorist methods forced a re-examination of such norms.
