- Title
The League of Nations: An international relations perspective.

- Abstract
The League of Nations was the first attempt at institutionalised multilateral cooperation of a universal and democratic kind. The League was the result of various reservations and compromises and although First world War had shown the terrible destructive potential of modern war, it was difficult to relinquish the policy of power and the principle of national sovereignty, though the growing interdependence had increasingly started to reveal its limitations. The League of Nations was nevertheless an important experience, especially from a long-term perspective, and its failure was overemphasised by scholars more interested in highlighting the inevitability of the policy of power in the relations between states than in understanding its novelty.
