- Abstract
The article discusses the author's experience as the recipient of the Senior Associate Fellowship at the British School at Rome. The author applied for the fellowship to further their research on museum practices in world literature, specifically focusing on postcolonial objects at the Museo Italo Africano 'Ilaria Alpi' in Rome. Due to various factors, including COVID-19 restrictions and other academic responsibilities, the author was unable to visit the British School at Rome as frequently as planned. However, when they did have the opportunity to engage with the community, it was a rewarding experience. The author's research in Rome contributed to their book project, which explores the collection, curation, and display of objects as a means of retelling histories of empire, war, borders, and mobility. They examine acclaimed world literature novels that incorporate elements of museum practices and use them as narrative archives. During their time in Rome, the author focused on a chapter that explores practices of restitution by juxtaposing Maaza Mengiste's novel, The Shadow King, with an installation of colonial objects at the Museo delle Civiltà. This research allowed the author to delve into questions of care, repair, restitution, and decolonization in museums. The book manuscript is now complete and scheduled for publication in autumn 2024.
