- Abstract
Aside from brief mentions of "eccentric" architecture in Rome's built environment, little has been written about the neo-Gothic edifice that once stood atop the Palatine Hill and incorporated Villa Magnani above the Domus Augustana. Activities in Rome included library research of literature that touched upon the so-called "Villa Mills" - including guide books and travel books - and on-site inspections of the area of the Palatine where the house once stood and of the Non-Catholic Cemetery in Rome, where Charles Andrew Mills was buried. Evidence that came to light during my research suggested that this neo-Gothic mansion, known as "Villa Mills", should be renamed "Villa Smith", as it was Colonel Robert Smith who pursued the medievalist makeover after acquiring the property from Mills.
