- Abstract
The article discusses the ongoing political and territorial conflict in Kashmir, which is one of the longest existing conflicts from the aftermath of the British Empire. Kashmir and Jammu were granted quasi-autonomy at the end of British rule, with the status of the states to be determined by a popular referendum. However, the referendum has not occurred, possibly due to India's fear of losing its claim and the people of Jammu/Kashmir voting for independence. The conflicts between India and Pakistan over Kashmir have resulted in wars, and India's repression and military occupation have led to an armed insurgency. The recent actions of India's Hindu nationalist government have further curtailed the states' autonomy and civil liberties. The article also highlights the book "Nuclear Flashpoint: The War Over Kashmir" by Dr. Farhan Mujahid Chak, which provides a historical and critical examination of India's manipulation of Kashmir's history to deny its liberation struggle. The author argues that India's repression has intensified under the Hindu Nationalist Party and its leader Narendra Modi, and describes the situation in Kashmir as one of colonial occupation. The article emphasizes the importance of Kashmir's fate to the world, as India and Pakistan have fought two wars over the region, and tensions remain high.
