- Abstract
The article focuses on the legacy of infant schools and its European origins. A historical background is provided on the organization of schools for young children in early-19th century Great Britain, the private dame schools for children from working class families, and the infant schools. It also explains the metamorphosis of the infant school model into a structured program with emphasis in religious education and early literacy based on Everett Roger's diffusion of innovations theory.
