Linking Literacy and Movement.
- Authors
Pica, Rae
- Abstract
The article offers the author's insights on the linkage between physical movement and literacy for children. The author states that movement and language are considered as forms of communication and self-expression. Neuroscience educator Dee Coulter says that combination rhythmic movement with speech and song affects the inner speech and impulse control of children that are essential to language development, self-management, and social skills. B. A. Block suggests that allowing children to listen to the rhythm of language and to take part in physical expressions of its rhythm provides them with access to learning modes. Moreover, comprehension of words could be long lasting if children physical manifest action words.
