The article discusses the breakdown of the marriage of Charles and Catherine Dickens in May 1858. Topics include on 25 May, a letter seemingly intended for private circulation, locating the origin of the breakdown solely in differences between himself and his wife; provoked speculation about the possible involvement of a third party; and indications of the identity of more than one young lady allegedly involved appeared in the press, often alongside declarations of disbelief in the gossip.
