- Abstract
The article explores the complex relationship between religious pilgrimages and environmental waste, using examples from various locations around the world. It specifically focuses on the Círio de Nazaré pilgrimage in Brazil, where millions of pilgrims generate a significant amount of waste. The article examines the tension between the spiritual value of the pilgrimage and its negative environmental impact, as well as the economic value derived by stakeholders. It also discusses the impact of a dumping ground in the Amazon Rainforest and highlights the often marginalized recyclable materials collectors. The article calls for a rethinking of the environmental impact of mega-events and raises questions about plastic use, collective consumption, and waste disposal.
