- Abstract
The article is a book review of "These Potatoes Look Like Humans: The Contested Future of Land, Home and Death in South Africa" by uMbuso weNkosi. The book explores the history of land dispossession and violence experienced by black South African farm laborers, focusing on the region of Bethal. It delves into the conditions of farmworkers, the violence of white supremacy, the affective economy, and the ongoing violence in the agriculture sector. The book also examines the connections between loss and materiality, the role of the past in current land ownership debates, and the spiritual and psychic aspects of land for black South Africans. The author employs a narrative methodology that links past, present, and future temporalities, and calls for a conscious awareness of history and its impact on the present.
