- Abstract
This article is a response to a letter regarding a study on the role of microvascular invasion (mVI) in predicting the recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after resection. The authors clarify that mVI is defined as the presence of vascular invasion of small vessels, and this definition is widely accepted among pathologists. They also state that all surgical specimens in their study were analyzed by trained pathologists, and the calibration between predicted and observed recurrence rates was excellent. The prevalence of mVI in their study falls within the range reported in other recent publications. The authors conclude that their study provides a robust framework for stratifying the risk of HCC recurrence after resection.
