- Abstract
The article profiles Virginia author and suffragist Mary Johnston. It examines Johnston's literary influences, particularly the U.S. Civil War, the attitudes of Virginians toward the U.S. Civil War, and her father, John William Johnston, on her novels including "To Have and To Hold," "Lewis Rand," and "The Long Roll." The article discusses her portrayal of Confederate general Stonewall Jackson, her portrayal of southern life and values, and criticism of her books. It also discusses her activism in the U.S. women's movement of the early 20th century.
