- Title
Clough, Bankruptcy, and Disbelief: The Economic Back-ground to "Blank Misgivings".
- Authors
Scott, Patrick
- Abstract
The article applies post-Marxist criticism to Arthur Hugh Clough's early religious poetry in terms of his father's involvement in the cotton trade. The article argues that Clough's economic imagery refers not only to a sense of moral indebtedness and bankruptcy, but literal economic bankruptcy as well. The article argues that Clough's religious poetry has been neglected and misunderstood in favor of his later satiric works but asserts that an economic reading can add to Clough criticism.
