- Abstract
Western nations are experiencing a lowering age of puberty. Many show a declining age of first marriage. Technological developments have dictated an increasing age of economic maturity. The divergence between the ages of sexual maturity and economic maturity affects other social institutions. United States school practice has tended to prohibit attendance for married students, pregnant students, and student mothers. This study illustrates the decrease in restrictive practice since 1940 in large school districts, by regions, and compares it with small districts. Note is made of special programs and the scarcity of studies made by school districts regarding this subject area.
