The article analyzes literary theorist Geoffrey Hartman's views on John Milton's poem "Paradise Lost." Topics discussed include the counterplot of the poem as identified by Hartman, his analysis of the concepts of uncertainty and doubt in Milton's poem and Hartman's association of the pastoral images in Milton's poem with the Jewish Holocaust as discussed in his book "Holocaust Remembrance: The Shapes of Memory."
