The article analyzes genre self-identification of English fiction from 1660 to 1800 in order to determine how fiction's self-identification involves culturally specific tendencies. The author bases the study on quantitative research of bibliographies associated with the period by several compilers such as Charles C. Mish, William Harlin McBurney, Jerry C Beasley, James Raven, and Peter Garside.
