- Abstract
Ādābu'l-Baḥṯ wa-'l-Munaẓara, as a methodological scientific discipline, examines the principles of scientific debates in terms of uncovering the truth and is included as an instrumental science in the curriculum of Ottoman madrasas.6 Cedel, which is an argumentation method in classical Islamic thought, was developed by Islamic scholars based on the Qur'an and Sunnah because it did not conform to the discussion method in the Qur'an.7 By the 14th century, Cedel had become an argumentation theory that could be used in all fields of knowledge and was given a new name, "Ādābu'l-Baḥṯ wa-'l-Munaẓara" (Etiquette of Discussion and Debate).8 Šams al-Din al-Samarqandi (d. 1302) stated in his logic work titled "Kıstāsu'l-Efkār" that Cedel, which was one of the five arts, had lost its functionality and therefore, the science of "Fi'l- Baḥṯ wa-'l-Munaẓara" (Discussion and Debate) should be explained in the Cedel section. Thus, Šams al-Din al-Samarqandi evaluated all the accumulated knowledge related to the preceding argumentation method in his logic work and began to form a new argumentation theory.9 Ṭāshkoprī'zāda Aḥmad Afandī continued the tradition of šarḥ (explanation) and ḥāšiye (gloss) with his treatises. He wrote two works in the field of ādāb al-baḥṯ wa- 'l-Munaẓara: Risāla fī ādāb al-baḥṯ, for which he also wrote a brief summary, and Šarḥ 'alā ar-Risāla fī ādāb al-baḥṯ wa-'l-Munaẓara, a commentary on his own work. There are references to a manḍūm munaẓara work named Manḍūm ādāb al-baḥṯ wa-'l-Munaẓara li-Ṭāshkoprī'zāda in manuscript libraries. However, classical biographical sources do not attribute any manḍūm work to Ṭāshkoprī'zāda Aḥmad Afandī. This article discusses Ṭāshkoprī'zāda's poetic work named Manḍūme Ādābu'l-Baḥṯ wa-'l-Munaẓara li-Ṭashkoprî-zāda. The work is a madrasa text written in verse form, addressing the subject and principles of scientific debate ('İlm-i Munaẓara) to facilitate memorization. Additionally, it presents the description, critical edition, and translation of Manḍūme Ādābu'l-Baḥṯ wa-'l-Munaẓara li-Ṭāshkoprī-zāde. The work, whose name is found as a source in manuscript libraries but is not mentioned in classical biographical works, is evaluated comparatively in terms of style and choice of words.
