- Abstract
Arterial spasm with danger to the extremity due to dihydroergotamine (DHE) seem to be very rare. Since 1981 we have observed six cases with DHE-induced arterial spasm, of which 5 received DHE/heparin for prophylaxis against thromboembolism. All of these cases had a trauma of the extremity. The mean age was 34.2 years. Angiographical findings were typical for peripheral arterial spasm. After unsuccessful treatment with vasodilating drugs and sympatholysis, operative dilation with the Fogarty catheter was used in all but one patients. None of the patients had major arterial thrombosis. Nevertheless, amputation was necessary in all cases.
