- Abstract
The research aimed to analyze the effect of the candidates ’tribal affiliation and their electoral alliances on the voters’ voting preferences in the 2015 Parliament elections in Matrouh Governorate. As these elections witnessed a competition between 32 candidates belonging to the tribes and nine candidates belonging to immigrants from the Nile Valley and Delta, as these elections witnessed the emergence of six electoral alliances, each of which brings together two candidates. The research followed the areal-ecological approach; it was based on the detailed results of the elections at the level of 187 sub-electoral committees that the governorate included, and on the field study to determine the tribal affiliation of the candidates, in order to create a database for the voting results of the candidates according to their characteristics. The research included several elements: the spatial organization of the elections, the characteristics of the candidates, the geography of voting, the areas of voting dominance for the tribal candidates, and the effect of alliances between candidates on voting. The research dealt with the analysis of the statistical and spatial correlation between the votes of allied candidates. The research concluded that candidates' tribal affiliation dominated the elections in Matrouh governorate, with the exception of Marsa Matrouh district, where the electoral weight of non-tribal candidates was evident, even though the influence of tribes remained the highest, and the research demonstrated the vital role that electoral alliances between candidates played in determining voter preferences, particularly in Marsa Matrouh district.
