- Abstract
The article reports on the capability of introns to encode a separate class of microRNA (miRNA) precursors called mirtrons. Scientists found that the intron pathway could process Drosophila melanogaster introns before they are cleaved by the Dicer protein into functional miRNAs. Meanwhile, they likewise found that mirtrons and miRNAs both depend on Exportin-5 protein for their transfer to cytoplasm and on Argonaute-1 protein for the regulation of messenger RNAs.
